AYSO was founded in 1964 in Torrance, California. The American Youth Soccer Organization states that it develops and delivers quality youth soccer programs based on six philosophies: Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Positive Coaching, Open Registration, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development. Its Everyone Plays philosophy requires every player on every team to play at least half of every game, and its Balanced Teams philosophy requires each region to set up teams as evenly balanced as possible at the start of each season. AYSO trains and encourages coaches to use Positive Coaching, and its Open Registration policy applies to all children ages 4–18 who want to register and play soccer. AYSO describes itself as a volunteer organization with more than 250,000 parents and friends, many serving as coaches, referees, and administrators, and notes that it can be a total family experience.

Michael Karon, President of AYSO, is part of the leadership team and has received the Stack Leadership Award from Stack Sports for his impact in the world of sports volunteering. AYSO’s community involvement includes partnerships with BEEUP Snacks, Chicago Public Schools, AYSO United + AYSO EPIC - Rancho Conejo, and Northland Sports Alliance. AYSO and the U.S. Center for Mental Health & Sport have announced a partnership focused on player and volunteer wellness, and AYSO supports U.S. Soccer efforts to improve SafeSport. The City of Lancaster has been scheduled to host the American Youth Soccer Organization National Open Cup 2017.
