About

Summer Kids Camp at Bitter Root Pottery focuses on wheel throwing and hand building projects in a ceramics studio setting. Campers work on specific pieces such as a Lidded Frog Jar, Hanging Wall Sconce, Ice Cream Bowl and Spoon, Dinosaur Bowl, Animal Sgraffito Plate, Peekaboo Mug, Floating Animal Plate, Can of Sardines Sculpture, Pinch Pot Monsters, Chip n Dip Bowl, Berry Bowl Strainer, Fruit Bowl, Caterpillar Cup, and Turtle Mug.

• Ages: 6–12 years old
• Schedule: Monday through Friday, 2.5 hours per day in each session
• Price: $95/day (Instructor gratuity included)

The program includes instruction, aprons, clay, tools, underglazes, a choice of glaze colors, and post-production and firings. Each week is open to 12 students, and a minimum of 4 sign-ups is required for a session to run. The studio notes that pottery pieces require about 6–8 weeks to go through the full firing and post-production process, and occasionally pieces do not make it through the firing process, with completed pieces not guaranteed and no refunds issued for pieces that do not make it. There are no refunds or rescheduling options for the camp.

Families are asked to send each child with their own water bottle labeled with their name and to have children come dressed comfortably, with long hair tied back and jewelry and watches removed. Some new clays can stain clothing, so clothes that can get clay on them are recommended, and clean aprons are provided. Long nails are described as not pottery-friendly. Guardians must greet the teacher and sign the child into class on the first day, and one ticket admits one child to attend. The studio asks families to allow at least 6–8 weeks for pottery to complete the firing process and to pick up finished work within 30 days of being contacted.

The mission statement for Bitter Root Pottery explains that participants are coming for the whole experience of working in a ceramics studio with a knowledgeable, friendly instructor, and that instructors have been working for years in this discipline to reach their current skill level. The mission also notes that these skills cannot be imparted in one session and encourages a focus on enjoying the experience of working with clay and engaging with the creative process in depth. The studio invites families to join the Bitter Root Community and to join the mailing list to keep up to date with studio news, offers, and events.
