About
Jefunira Camp offers a mix of field games, sports, engineering projects, water play, camp carnivals, storytelling, games, acting out skits, and lip-syncs. Campers also play camp-specific games such as Tip the Bucket and Bucket of Fortune as part of the daily activities.
• Ages: 4–18 years old
• Schedule: Daily schedule includes pre-camp care starting at 8:00 AM and warm ups starting at 9:00 AM
Jefunira Camp’s mission is to create a safe and welcoming camp community where children develop self-esteem, self-confidence, and social/emotional skills, with an emphasis on kids being outdoors, unplugged, safe, and having fun. The camp offers age-specific programs, including a Junior Camp Program for children entering Pre-K or Kindergarten who are at least 4 years old, a Day Camp Program for campers entering grades 1–6, a Leaders in Training Program for those entering grades 7–9, and a Junior Counselor Program for those entering grades 10–12. The Junior Counselor Program is free to join and provides community service hours. Jefunira Camp uses unique and relatively unknown names for games to create a more inclusive environment, maintains low counselor-to-camper ratios, and combines good old-fashioned summer fun with games and activities from around the world and other unique innovations.
Jefunira Camp was founded in 1991 by Jeff Gamble and Ira Lit, after they first met as freshman roommates in 1986. In their first summer, they had eight campers, and the next summer they grew to 15 campers and hired their first counselor. Jefunira Camp has been accredited by the American Camp Association since 1994 and is a member of the Western Association of Independent Camps (WAIC). The leadership team includes Director & Founder Jeff Gamble and Directors Gabe Schacter-Brodie, Mary McClain, and Jayson Gamble. The camp is accredited by the American Camp Association, which focuses on program quality and health and safety issues and requires review of every facet of camp operation. Jefunira Camp chose to become a member of WAIC, which provides independent camp owners with a professional network and supports that help members ensure that every camper has the best possible camp experience.
Parent feedback about Jefunira Camp includes comments that the program is different every session, that campers try many activities from sports to acting out skits, and that counselors are described as caring and focused on making sure everyone is having a good time. Parents describe the camp as “good old-fashioned fun” with activities such as storytelling, games, lip-syncs, and otter pops, and several note that their children have returned summer after summer. One parent, a mental health provider, reports that many children of psychiatrists and psychologists attend Jefunira Camp and that their own children “loved every minute of it.” Another parent describes Jefunira Camp as “THE MOST FUN, HAPPY TIMES AND SPECIAL SUMMER MEMORIES,” and mentions collecting photo magnets from the camp on their refrigerator each year.
