The SAGE Mission is to engage curious and passionate students in STEM and empower them to explore a wide range of possibilities for their future. SAGE Camp at SLAC is the first step in a student’s SAGE Journey, which is supported by the SAGE community through post-camp events and programs. During SAGE Camp, students gain exposure to a wide range of career possibilities, meet STEM professionals at National Laboratories at various stages of their careers, connect with fellow students, and join the SAGE Community to learn about support and guidance related to education, work, and life goals. The program also highlights how careers can be enhanced by interests in art, music, athletics, creative writing, travel, and other areas while using observation, interpretation, and analytic skills. Through SAGE, students have access to internship opportunities in high school and during post-secondary education, and participating in SAGE Camp is described as the starting point of a student’s SAGE Journey, where they become part of a support network that includes opportunities such as internships, jobs, and leadership development programs.

The SAGE Summer Camp was piloted in August 2018 with 20 participants from the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and in 2019 it hosted 40 students from public high schools throughout Northern California. During 2020–2021, SAGE Summer Camp shifted to a virtual format, and hands-on projects were made possible through SAGE Kits shipped to students’ homes before camp. Since 2022, 40 high school students have been hosted every year. Alumni of SAGE Camp participate in post-camp activities such as SAGE Live online events approximately monthly.

SAGE Camp at SLAC is one of three SAGE Camps at National Labs in the Bay Area and one of seven SAGE Camps at National Labs in the country. It is supported by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the SLAC Lab Director, the Office of High Energy Physics within the Office of Science of the Department of Energy, and many SLAC and Stanford volunteers. Volunteers within the SLAC community interact with students throughout the day in informal conversations during mealtimes and during Career Talks, projects, tours, Job Shadowing, and other activities. SAGEx School Clubs have been established at some schools by SAGE Alumni so that more students can access resources such as career speakers and tours. Consistent with Stanford University’s Accessibility Policy, SAGE Camp invites students who need special accommodations to contact the program upon acceptance. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is operated by Stanford University for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.

The SAGE Camp leadership team includes an Executive Committee with SAGE Co-Chairs Nicole Neveu and Natalie Geise, along with Scott Kaminski, Maia Coladonato, Hannah Pollek, Analisa Tan, Molly Glover, Nikoo Samee, Chereace Marcellin, Bhavna Nayak, Katyayini Kumar Vemulkar, Rachael Kretsch, Elena McConnell, Diane Kelley, Catherine Weibel, Alysson Loo, Alondra Galindo, Sharon Perez, Cristina Padilla, and Grace Nye. SAGE Co-Founders are Giulia Lanza and Diana Gamzina. Daniela Partida is the SAGE Camp Program Coordinator, and Loy Oppus-Moe is the SAGE Journey Program Coordinator. Students apply to SAGE Camp online via the Kaleidoscope platform.
