About
The SLAC CORE Science Institute offers a variety of hands-on activities for participants. Kids engage in coding, electronics, and programming Arduino kits. They also explore scientific concepts such as thin film interference from bubbles and generate electricity using a Van de Graaf generator. Other activities include learning Newton’s laws of motion through basketball, taking apart old cell phones, and participating in a chemistry demonstration to make ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Students work in pairs to prepare and present a poster, which is considered a valuable part of the week.
• Ages: 11–14 years old
• Schedule: week-long summer camp
The program has a partnership with Ile Omode, an African-centered middle school in Oakland. Margaux Lopez is the camp organizer.
