About

Mt Tam Bikes Camp focuses on mountain biking and related skills, including bike games, drills, and trail rides. Campers practice foundational skills such as proper body position, braking, and shifting, and may progress to wheel lifts, bunny hops, and drops. The program also includes learning how to change flat tires, trail etiquette, local ecology, and bike mechanics, along with group games on and off the bikes and the occasional water fight.

• Ages: 8–14 years old
• Schedule: Summer sessions run Monday–Friday from 9 AM–3 PM, with free early drop-off starting at 8:30 AM.

Mt Tam Bikes Camp was started in 2006 and has hosted over 4000 campers in its programs. The camp maintains a 5:1 camper to instructor ratio and welcomes novice to advanced participants within the stated age range. All participants receive a mandatory bike safety check by a professional mechanic, which is required and included to confirm each camper’s bike is safe, adequate, and ready to ride. At the end of each session, parents receive a list of locations and GPS maps to track their camper's rides.

Staff at Mt Tam Bikes Camp are outdoor educators who are seasoned experts in coaching, guiding, and safety techniques developed and refined over the past 20 years. The founder and lead instructor, Ryan Loften, has been mentoring and coaching kids for the past 25 years. He is a member of the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education and has been a certified CPR Wilderness First Responder since 1996. Ryan teaches mountain biking year-round through after-school rides at Mill Valley Middle School and private instruction for riders of all ages and abilities, and he grew up BMX racing, dirt jumping, and mountain biking on Mount Tamalpais and in Marin County.

The program’s mission statement is: “At Mt Tam Bikes Camp we live in the mindset that adventure is not always where you find it, but how you find it. Our camp connects kids with adventure on bikes everywhere we go.” Rides are tailored to the weather and to the ability of all participants, and instructors bring deep knowledge of local routes and trails. Bike games, drills, and trail rides keep kids moving, and the day is broken up with group games on and off the bikes, as well as cooling off with the occasional water fight. The camp uses improv humor, goofy jokes, and alter egos as part of its approach.

Participants are required to bring a geared mountain bike that fits properly and is in good working order, a properly fitting helmet with no cracks or missing padding, and bike gloves, preferably full-fingered. They also need to bring a hearty lunch and snack, plus a water bottle or hydration pack. Recommended clothing includes shorts or padded cycling shorts (which can be worn under regular shorts), a T-shirt and a warm top layer, and closed-toe shoes that are comfortable for riding.
