Shakespearience was founded in 2007 and became a non-profit in 2014. Its mission is to cultivate a safe, nurturing and creative environment for students, with Shakespeare and swords. The program offers roles such as Captain in Training for 8th–10th grade students and Shakespearience Captain for 11th and 12th grade students. Shakespearience is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It provides inter-curricular programs at local schools, after-school workshops and summer camps in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and holds an annual student showcase called THE SALON. The program states that it empowers students through William's words and sword-play, focuses on creating empathy through the stage, and promotes diversity and inclusiveness through Shakespeare's plays and poems regardless of ethnicity, gender, orientation, religion, development, and economics. It also states a belief that all walks of life are valued equally, that different points of view are pivotal in the creative process, and that part of its educational goal is to instill mutual respect, with the idea that all are teachers and students and can learn from differences.
