About
Tamalpais Strawberry Preschools offers a play-based curriculum that is tailored to children’s interests and evolves based on teachers’ observations of spontaneous play. The curriculum is organized around weekly and monthly themes across developmental stages, and the primary teaching philosophy is based on the work of Jean Piaget. Teachers work with children in small groups to help them see things from other children's perspectives.
• Ages: 3–5 years old
Tamalpais Strawberry Preschools has been in continuous operation since 1956 and is among the oldest independent preschools in Marin County. The schools are nonsectarian and were built cooperatively with the churches in which they are housed, and they operate as a private 501(c)3 non-profit corporation. The program’s stated focus is the whole child, emphasizing each child’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. All teachers have been trained in Early Childhood Education and participate in regular in-service training, workshops, and seminars. Tamalpais Strawberry Preschools are licensed by the State of California, and the COO is Rose Moran.
The schools hold gatherings throughout the year such as a back-to-school lemonade social, parent coffees, a Halloween Festival, Parents' Night Out, a spring party at the park, and group play dates, and preschool is described as an opportunity for families to meet other families in the community. Events are adapted to meet the needs of the community to foster lifelong friendships for students and families.
Parents describe the teachers as exceptional and as some of their children's most cherished individuals, and they report that the teachers have laid a strong foundation for formal education while fostering social and emotional development. One parent reports that preschool has been a wonderful experience for their family, that their child has developed both physically and emotionally over two years, and that the child is prepared to head to kindergarten, and the family looks forward to sending a second child.
