Modesto Sound’s mission is to empower youth with real-world job skills to create music and artistic media. Over the years, Modesto Sound has recorded more than 650 artists, hosted hundreds of concerts, produced over 180 radio shows, and created thousands of public service announcements. The program offers a Summer Recording Arts Music Camp and holds a Recording Arts Camp every year at the Gallo Center for the Arts. The Job Circle is an ongoing job training program designed to prepare youth for careers in the music and sound industries, and podcast radio shows and podcasts are created for public radio and streaming.

The teachers in the program have been musicians, and staff are seen frequently at community events. Modesto Sound is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) with a volunteer Board of Directors, and a former Modesto Sound youth artist became Executive Director. The current Executive Director is Mitchell Dill. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3), Modesto Sound works with local organizations, and grants, donations, community support, and sponsors make the programs possible and support youth in building real job skills in music and creative media.

One grandmother shared that her 10-year-old grandson attended the summer camp after already taking piano lessons and found numerous kids who also had a passion for music. She reported that he learned different types of music, took part in writing a song, performed on stage at the end of the week, learned about sound equipment and recording, and went on field trips to radio stations, the Gallo Arts Center, State Theatre, and California State University Stanislaus, with hands-on experience on sound systems. Over five years, she said he continued with additional sound camp sessions, wrote, performed, and recorded original songs, played multiple instruments, and had recording sessions at Modesto Sound where he learned about recording various instruments and creating an original CD.
