Adventure Day Camp is a traditional summer day camp that states a mission of providing a welcoming, lively, safe, positive, and diverse environment for children ages 3–15, with activities that expose campers to fun, exciting, and at times challenging experiences that strengthen teamwork skills, bolster confidence, and develop self-esteem. The camp’s philosophy emphasizes three-week sessions that allow participation in both group and individual activities at each camper’s own pace, with a focus on campers feeling at home within their camp group and promoting group unity and a sense of “family” within the group and the camp as a whole.

Adventure Day Camp has been owned and operated by the Welch family since 2000. Camp Directors Kevin and Sunshine Welch are actively involved in all aspects of the camp program and together have over 50 years of summer camp experience. Sunshine Welch earned a B.S. in Recreation Administration from California State University, Chico, holds a state certificate in Recreational Therapy, and has worked extensively with adults and children with developmental, physical, and mental disabilities. Kevin Welch holds a B.A. in Business from Clark University and has been involved in summer camps for most of his life, from camper to director. Each group of campers is led by Co-Camp Counselors who are 17 years or older and have extensive experience working with children, and all staff complete an extensive three-day training program, with most staff certified in First Aid and C.P.R. Program Directors are described as highly qualified and skilled adults, and each Program Director is responsible for specific age ranges, with most having worked with Adventure Day Camp for five or more years and many having attended as campers. All swimming is fully supervised by Red Cross Certified Lifeguards.

Campers visit the San Pablo Reservoir in Orinda to participate in the Boating program, and campers entering PreK–2nd grade visit the Angels For Minis Farm in Walnut Creek to experience Miniature Horses. Science Club takes place each Wednesday morning. The program includes Lip Sync performances, Staff Follies, a Talent Show, and a Camp Play. Bus transportation is offered for families who do not live in or near Walnut Creek. On Overnight Campout days, Adventure Day Camp runs only the Overnight Camping Trip program; if a child does not attend the campout in any capacity, they must be picked up by 12:00 pm on the day of the campout and may be dropped off again after 11:30 am the next day.

Another parent from Alamo, CA, shared that their typically shy 5-year-old with social anxiety quickly became comfortable at camp, enjoyed activities such as horseback riding, archery, rock climbing, basketball, and hockey, and attended all three sessions after starting with one. A parent from Alamo, CA, reported that their children attended from 2005–2011, planned their summers around the camp schedule, and especially enjoyed the overnight camp Pura Vida, calling it the best two weeks of the year at that time. A parent from Oakland, CA, described their son’s strong preference for returning to Adventure Day Camp, highlighting the bus rides, Overnight Camping Trip, horseback riding, swim lessons, and rock climbing, and noted that he adjusted well to a new counselor. A parent from San Leandro, CA, stated that their daughter has attended since age 4, looks forward to returning each summer, and enjoys activities including sports, rock climbing, arts and crafts, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, and swimming, and they appreciated the bus transportation option. A parent from Berkeley, CA, reported that their child has attended since the summer after kindergarten and that their shy 12-year-old niece, who knew no one, also had a positive experience, and they specifically mentioned liking the real yellow school bus service.
