About
The BANDALOOP Education Program offers vertical dance workshops that use technical climbing equipment. The program also includes team-building experiences that take place in a studio setting.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Registration typically closes 1 week (7 days) prior to the workshop.
• Price: Cancellations will be honored up to 2 weeks (14 days) in advance of the workshop start date, refunded as class credit, minus a $25 administrative fee.
The program offers year-round vertical dance workshops for learners of all ages, genders, and movement backgrounds, including professional and pre-professional level trainings for vertical performers and youth programs. Workshops focus on site-reactive, off-the-ground performance making and use Metolius Waldo Harnesses, with multiple harness sizes available, including some smaller youth sizes. Workshops are structured around a Culture of Safety and use technical climbing equipment with adaptations available for those with specific access needs, and they are designed to engender an embodied sense of connectivity within oneself, with a partner, and in groups and communities.
BANDALOOP’s Education Program states that it serves movers of all ages and works to be a more equitable organization with an understanding that harmful historical bias and oppression pervades the performing arts. With an understanding that access needs are diverse and every disability is different, BANDALOOP Studios states that it strives to create a safe(r) space for the justice, dignity, and joy of persons living with disabilities. The studios have a fragrance-free policy, are a smoke-free space, and have ADA accessible studios and bathrooms, while the mezzanine is not ADA accessible and toilet facilities are gender neutral. Masking is supported and not required for indoor activities, vaccination is required for all employees of BANDALOOP, and vaccination is encouraged for all students when possible.
BANDALOOP collaborates with local organizations, schools, and major corporations through offerings that include team-building experiences. The program creates access to workshops for economically diverse communities, with work-study positions and scholarships granted throughout the year, and employs the services and counsel of Gravity Access Services for access needs of community members with diverse sensory modalities and physicalities. A testimonial from Sarah Crowell, Artistic Director of Destiny Arts Center, describes a partnership with Amelia Rudolph and BANDALOOP as one of Destiny Arts Center’s most powerful and enduring of its 25-year history, bringing sophisticated aerial dance training to many youth.
All BANDALOOP registration is done through SADC’s registration platform, Momence. Participants are asked to bring their own snacks, lunch, and refillable water bottle, and to wear clothing that covers the torso and legs above the knee, such as bike unitards, leotards, Spanx, high-waisted pants or shorts, or a long shirt that can be tucked in, to avoid harness rub on the skin. For students with external genitalia, undergarments that offer support and containment, such as a jock strap, are encouraged, and compression undergarments are not recommended. Participants are asked to avoid big or long jewelry, to pull long hair back, to limit coffee or other acidic foods right before class, to eat substantial meals two or more hours prior, to use ginger if prone to nausea when upside down, and to start hydrating at least 24 hours in advance of a workshop. Harness sizes available include XXXS (waist 22"–24"), XXS (waist 24"–26.5"), XS (waist 26.5"–29"), S (waist 29"–31.5"), M (waist 31.5"–35"), L (waist 35"–39"), L/XL (waist 33"–42") full-body harness, plus some smaller youth sizes. Class credits can be used toward any other BANDALOOP programming, do not expire, and are not transferable.
