About

BCO Youth Club – BCO Youth Basketball League organizes youth basketball teams that are part of the East Bay Youth Athletic League. Players take part in basketball games that follow a basketball game schedule and may also join fundraising and service events such as Mochitsuki, a Food festival & bazaar, and the Obon festival, where they can work community service hours.

• Schedule: The basketball season typically runs from October through March.
• Price: Each player shall pay a Player Participation Fee. A fee of $250 per family may be assessed if community service commitments are not fulfilled.

The BCO Youth Club is an extension of the Buddhist Church of Oakland and is a church-sponsored activity group for school aged children and their families. Both boys and girls are welcome to join, and teams are formed the summer before the season starts. Youth Club membership requires a registration fee along with a volunteer commitment each season, and every player and a parent are responsible for participating in two church volunteer events. To maintain player eligibility, each family must participate in a minimum of two of the three major fundraising and service events during the twelve month period beginning each September 1st, and one parent or guardian and the player must work community service hours, with community service required for each sibling who plays for BCO Youth Club. One adult member of each player’s family is asked to serve as a contributing member of the BCO Youth Club organizing committee or to hold a service position at the team level, and membership and player eligibility may be revoked or denied for families that do not fulfill their service commitments. Completing the membership application does not guarantee a spot on a team, as team placement is determined by overall registration numbers and league guidelines, and if the sponsoring organization cannot field a team, a child may be offered an opportunity to play on the team of an alternate choice. Uniforms and optional tournament fees are not included in the Player Participation Fee and are collected later, and players must pay all outstanding invoices before placement onto a team for the 2022–2023 season. Both a Membership Agreement and Emergency Medical Attention Form and the applicable League Application must be read, completed, and accepted before a player can participate in a BCO Youth Club activity, and as a condition of membership, parents and players agree to a Code of Ethics and to release, indemnify, and hold BCO and BCO Youth Club harmless from liability related to participation. For returning players, preferences for coach and division may be specified, and the 2025–26 registration deadline is September 12, 2025.

The BCO Youth Club is an extension of, and is supported by, the Buddhist Church of Oakland, whose mission is “The Mission of the Buddhist Church of Oakland is to be an inclusive and welcoming community where the Buddhist teachings are shared and practiced.” Youth Club promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and giving back to the community through Buddhist Church of Oakland sponsored events. Leadership and support roles at the church include Harry Gyokyo Bridge and Reverend Harry G Bridge as Resident Minister, Reverend Michael Endo as Minister Assistant, Doris Okano as Office Admin, Ron, John, and Jon with BCO Boys, and Charlie “The Church Dog.”
