Brilliant Baby offers program orientation, financial literacy classes, 1:1 financial coaching, and connections to resources for participating families. The program also hosts educational workshops where participants learn about child development and how to support early literacy skills, including monthly workshops called Community Connections. Most events are hosted on Zoom, with occasional in-person opportunities.

Brilliant Baby is part of Oakland Promise, whose mission is engaging the Oakland community to advance equity and economic mobility through cradle to college and career achievement. Each child enrolled in Brilliant Baby receives a 529 College Savings Account seeded with $500, and these college savings accounts are held at my529. Brilliant Baby supports children’s early healthy development and school-readiness by setting up college savings accounts for babies, offering financial coaching to parents and caregivers, and building a supportive community with the whole family. Program materials and events are available in multiple languages, and families that sign up receive bimonthly e-newsletters with program highlights, registration links for events, and tips on parenting, educational, and financial topics. Enrolled families may also join a private Facebook group and can follow Brilliant Baby on Instagram @brilliantbabyop.
Brilliant Baby partners with early childhood programs, pediatric clinics, and other social service providers that bring resources to families with new babies and toddlers. Approximately 2,200 babies are born into poverty in Oakland each year, and Brilliant Baby equips babies and their families with college savings accounts, financial guidance, and community. A total of 3,346 children have a college savings account seeded with $500 through Brilliant Baby, and over 79% of Oakland Promise funding goes directly to young people and families in Oakland. Oakland Promise earned a 2026 Candid Platinum Seal of Transparency.
In 2016, Oaklanders came together to make a promise to every child in the city, and in 2019, Oakland Promise and East Bay College Fund merged into one unified organization named Oakland Promise. The Brilliant Baby leadership team includes Aiyani Scott, Program Coordinator; Jay Lee, Senior Program Manager; Joci Kelleher, Director; Kadeef Salaam, Program Associate; and Yabnely Lara, Program Coordinator.
