About
Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) Sports – Diocese of Oakland offers girls’ volleyball, basketball, cross country, boys’ sand volleyball, track and field, cheer, and Scouts. CYO is described as “the place where faith, family, and sports meet,” and information and signups for CYO sports are through individual parish and Catholic school CYO programs. Last season, over 9,000 boys and girls in 3rd through 8th grades and over 900 teams participated in CYO Basketball.
• Ages: 8–13 years old
• Schedule: Seasonal sports with practices that may begin as early as mid-August or early September and league or meet play running through fall, winter, spring, or late May, depending on the sport
CYO Girls’ Volleyball practices may begin Sunday, September 1, with league play starting Friday, November 1, followed by the Jim Negri Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, January 17, 2026, and CYO Girls’ Volleyball Playoffs from Saturday to Tuesday, February 14–17, 2026. Boys’ and girls’ CYO Basketball in the Diablo Valley League may form teams beginning August 20, with practices starting Sunday, September 1, and includes October coaches’ certification workshops, preseason tournament play (TBD), Thanksgiving Tournament Play from Monday, November 25 to Sunday, December 1, Christmas Tournament Play from Monday, December 23 to Thursday, January 2, 2025, and playoffs and Tournament of Champions events in late February to early March. Cross Country 2025–2026 practices may begin Friday, August 15, with multiple Zoom meetings for parish/school coordinators and coaches in August and September, and five meets from September 13 through October 17, including the Oakland Diocese Open and the Oakland Diocese Championship. Dogs other than service animals are discouraged at cross country meets because they can create a hazard for children and the dog, and service animals are welcomed. Boys’ Sand Volleyball 2025 practices may begin Saturday, February 1, 2025, with a coordinators’ organizational meeting on Thursday, March 6, league games on Sunday afternoons beginning April 6, additional tentative league dates in April and May, and a season that ends with the Oakland Diocese CYO Boys’ Sand Volleyball Tournament in late May. Boys’ Sand Volleyball features fast, outdoor volleyball action on sunny Sunday afternoons in a park setting with picnics, families picnic in the park while teams are playing, no team standings are kept during the season, schedules are set weekly, all teams are invited to the late May tournament, and all Oakland Diocese CYO programs are invited to participate.
The mission of the Diocese of Oakland is “to know Christ better and to make Him better known.” The leadership team listed for the diocese includes Father Lawrence D’Anjou, Vicar General, and Teresa Peña, Executive Administrative Assistant, Office of the Vicar General. All parishes in the diocese participate in the Missionary Cooperative Plan Weekend Appeal during the summer months, organized through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, with donations assisting missionaries in sharing the faith in various countries and funds, less administrative costs, pooled and dispersed in equal shares to participating missions.
