The program is a non-profit organization that was certified as a 501(c)(3) corporation in the following year. Its primary goal is to teach and develop qualities such as integrity, self-esteem, and responsibility to the inner city youth of Oakland and the surrounding communities, using the game of golf as the vehicle to improve self esteem and establish beneficial life skills.
None of the instructors nor Board members receives any pay for their volunteer efforts, and the program exists primarily on charitable donations. Parents are expected to fundraise for the organization, and the program also provides financial support for its golfers to attend and compete in tournaments. In the past, it has received grants from the NCGA Foundation and donations from Callaway Golf, Nike, and Footjoy.
The Board of Directors includes Silas Brooks, President; Yvonne Lee, VP Operations; Roched Gonzales, Treasurer; Hera Tong Gutierrez; Gabriel Lawrence; Jennifer Kennedy; and David Champion. The official program schedule is published on TeamSnap, which is also used for announcing program cancellations and schedule changes due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Once accepted into MJGP, parents receive an email invite to TeamSnap and must sign in and maintain their contact information in the TeamSnap roster in order to receive updates from the program.
