About

The Oakland Interfaith Youth Choir focuses on performing Black gospel and spirituals. Participants perform at public, artistic, faith, and commercial events, and take part in special projects such as the Biennial Music Workshop, recordings, and tours. The choir also collaborates on cross-cultural musical projects and delivers musical experiences to institutionalized and underserved audiences, including prisons, shelters, and schools.

The mission of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, which includes the Oakland Interfaith Youth Choir, is to inspire joy and unity among all people through Black Gospel and Spiritual Music traditions. The organization assists other nonprofit organizations in their outreach efforts, serves the general public with free and low-cost performances, and brings together a culturally and ethnically diverse audience at self-produced outreach events. It provides young people with positive youth development opportunities rooted in spiritual and gospel music education, offers a Biennial Music Workshop along with recordings and tours, and builds and sustains a diverse and inclusive community that embraces all people while modeling and inspiring unity through the diversity of its membership and joyful performance. One choir member, Sharon Hymes-Offord, Alto, states, “If this choir is my way of demonstrating what this country should look like, then I’ll stay in it as long as I have a voice to sing.”
