Children Rising is an Oakland-based education nonprofit founded in 2001 in partnership with Oakland Unified School District and rebranded from Faith Network of the East Bay. Its mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence, and educational inequity. The organization focuses on struggling elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods and provides individualized reading and math support from trained volunteer tutors. Children Rising offers services in four program areas: CareerBridge, Health4Kids, Path2Math, and Succeeding by Reading, and provides support for families of children enrolled in its programs.
Children Rising mobilizes community support for children attending public schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity by raising awareness and rallying community support for their needs. The staff trains and supports over 200 volunteers from 20 congregations and 25 diverse community partners to teach, mentor, and support the children. The organization describes itself as faith inspired and non-proselytizing, with stated values that include Faith, The City, The Oppressed, Educational Equity, Relationship, and Servanthood.
The leadership team includes executive director Jim Wambach; community engagement manager Bronwyn Harris; press contact Eric Steckel; director of development Chelsea Boniak; and volunteer opportunities contact Julia Melancon. Tutors and volunteers describe their experiences with the program, including comments from Path2Math and Succeeding by Reading tutors and feedback noting the importance of the training, experience, and ongoing evaluation provided by the Children Rising team.
