Founded in 2001, Children Rising is an Oakland-based nonprofit educational agency and an education nonprofit founded in partnership with Oakland Unified School District. Its mission is to nurture and equip children to rise above the challenges created by generations of poverty, violence, and educational inequity. The organization offers four targeted programs: CareerBridge, Health4Kids, Path2Math, and Succeeding by Reading, and provides one-on-one literacy, math, and after-school homework support in elementary schools most affected by poverty, violence, and educational inequity. Children Rising serves over 400 students in 36 under-resourced public schools annually and seeks to address approximately 1,800 Oakland Unified School District second graders who are deficient in foundational reading and math skills.

Children Rising partners with Oakland Unified School District and mobilizes community support for struggling elementary school children living in Oakland’s lowest-income neighborhoods. It has over 200 trained tutors and mentors from church congregations and diverse community and business partners, with 20 congregations and 25 diverse community partners involved. The organization engages faith communities, service groups, local businesses, and other individuals, organizations, and institutions in the community, and describes itself as a non-proselytizing, faith-inspired organization with a focus on educational equity and closing the achievement gap. It emphasizes deep and caring relationships between tutor and student and trains, supports, coaches, and nurtures volunteers to become highly competent tutors, with a stated aim to recruit, train, and support 1,000 volunteers to assist 2,000 students each year by 2022. Children Rising also provides support for families of children enrolled in its programs.

The leadership team includes Executive Director Marshelle Wilburn; Executive Director Jim Wambach (referenced in quotes); Press contact Eric Steckel; Director of Development Chelsea Boniak; Volunteer Opportunities contact Sophia Wambach; Community Engagement Manager Bronwyn Harris; and tutors Carl Anderson (Path2Math), Suzanne Bourque (Succeeding by Reading), and Iyana Amayani (Succeeding by Reading), who are quoted in program materials. Tutor Robert C. Field states that the training and experience of the Children Rising team, along with ongoing evaluation of students and suggestions for dealing with particular student needs, enhances a tutor’s ability to stimulate student progress.
