Split Second Response is a licensed tactical training facility with a mission to empower individuals to defend themselves physically, tactically, and legally through martial arts, firearms training, CPR, and legal education. The founder, Dr. Timothy Calvin, is an educator, law enforcement veteran, former SWAT and undercover officer with Oakland and Novato Police Departments, a U.S. Marine Corps HAWK Missile Operator who achieved the rank of E-5 Sergeant, an 8th-degree Black Belt in Conditioned Combat, a three-time law enforcement academy instructor, and holds an Ed.D. in Organizational Change & Administration. The instructor team has backgrounds in law enforcement, the military, and SWAT.
The program is fully certified and licensed through the state of California for the BSIS Guard Card Course and operates as a licensed tactical training facility. It offers American Red Cross or HSI-certified training for adults and youth, including American Red Cross and HSI Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. Split Second Response notes that it is proudly serving Oakley, Brentwood, and beyond.
Unique features include a focus on Conditioned Combat as practical, aggressive self-defense, legal education on California use-of-force laws, and tactical firearms and less-lethal training ranging from CCW to tasers and Byrna. The program offers a job placement pipeline that combines BSIS certification with career guidance, a Security Officer Job Placement Program with 1-day certification and direct job placement for underserved groups, and mental conditioning and awareness training such as the OODA loop and threat response. Youth Real-World Safety includes CPR and legal awareness, and personal protection classes include less-lethal self-defense options, with an emphasis that this is not traditional martial arts but real-world readiness.
Parent and participant feedback includes comments that instructors are personable and professional and that the program provides self-defense classes and firearms training courses, as noted by Michael Kenner. Andrew D describes the staff as friendly and flexible and recommends the martial arts studio to beginners. James Nelson states that multiple children and grandchildren have trained with the academy and that they were treated as family. Chad Moore notes that there are classes for all age groups and that everyone is treated with respect. Traci Gould reports taking a CPR class and describes Tim as very helpful and responsive to questions.
