About
The Oceano Dunes Junior Lifeguard Program includes open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, boogie boarding, surfing, self rescue, and surf contests. Participants also take part in adventure paddles through the caves in North Pismo, a Pismo Beach pier jump, dune boarding, SUPsquatch adventures, riding on the RWC (jet ski), and, for those 16 and up, riding in the ROV in the dunes. The program also offers field trips to Santa Barbara and other unique beaches.
• Schedule: Summer programs run Monday–Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM in two sessions (Session 1: June 15–July 3; Session 2: July 13–31), and Fall Surf Sessions run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
• Price: One summer session costs $290.00 plus a $10 service fee, and each Fall Surf Session costs $100.
The Oceano Dunes Junior Lifeguard Program began in 2013. The stated objective of the program is to provide quality water safety education and to improve young people's physical conditioning, understanding of the environment, and respect for themselves and others. All Junior Lifeguard and Fall Surf Program instructors are Ocean Lifeguards certified in Public Safety First Aid, CPR, and AED, and they have passed an extensive 8-day academy run by the State of California in Huntington Beach. The leadership team includes Coordinator Obadiah Wheeler and Co-Coordinator Libby Machado.
The program offers FREE bussing to and from the Nipomo/Santa Maria area Monday through Friday for the Junior Lifeguard program courtesy of SMOOTH Transportation. Fall Surf Sessions are geared towards homeschool or charter school/hybrid kids and place emphasis on ocean safety and physical fitness with a focus on surf technique and practice. New Junior Lifeguard applicants must complete a swim test at a community pool, either filmed or signed off by a swim coach, and message the results to the ODJG cell at 805-888-1231 before registration. The tryout swim test requires a continuous 100-yard swim using the freestyle stroke in under 2½ minutes, a 10-yard underwater swim, and treading water for 3 minutes, and there is a tryout waiver for returning Junior Lifeguards who have participated in this or any other program within the last year.
