About
The Oceano Dunes Junior Lifeguard Program includes open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, boogie boarding, surfing, self rescue, adventure paddles through the caves in North Pismo, and a Pismo Beach pier jump. Participants also take part in riding in the ROV in the dunes (for ages 16 and up), riding on the RWC (jet ski), dune boarding, SUPsquatch adventures, surf contests, and field trips to Santa Barbara and other unique beaches. New applicants complete a swim test that includes a continuous 100-yard freestyle swim in under 2½ minutes, a 10-yard underwater swim, and treading water for 3 minutes.

• Schedule: Summer sessions run June 15–July 3 and July 13–31, with Junior Lifeguards Monday–Friday from 10:00am to 2:00pm; Fall Surf Sessions run Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am to 12:00pm
• Price: $290.00 plus a $10 service fee per summer session; $100 per Fall Surf Session
The program began in 2013. All Junior Lifeguard and Fall Surf Program instructors are Ocean Lifeguards certified in Public Safety First Aid, CPR, and AED, and they have passed an extensive 8-day academy run by the State of California in Huntington Beach. The leadership team includes Coordinator Kaitlyn Tolin and Co-Coordinator Obadiah Wheeler. The stated objective of the Oceano Dunes Junior Lifeguard Program is to provide quality water safety education and to improve young people's physical conditioning, understanding of the environment, and respect for themselves and others. The Junior Lifeguard Program uses its activities to introduce non-traditional user groups to marine and aquatic recreation environments. The Fall Surf Sessions are geared towards homeschool or charter school/hybrid kids and place emphasis on ocean safety, physical fitness, and surf technique and practice.
