About

BASE Programs offers before and after school enrichment that includes The Write Brain Project, a project based learning curriculum where students become published authors. In this program, students lead the creative process by storyboarding the plot and creating the illustrations for their books. The program describes the hours before and after school as a platform for creative learning on school campuses.

• Ages: 5–14 years old

BASE Programs states a mission of empowering youth to reach their greatest potential by becoming lifelong learners. The program describes its approach as creating meaningful experiences that encourage imagination, cultivate curiosity, and spark creativity, with learning that extends beyond the school day. It focuses on supporting 21st century learning and skills such as imagination and curiosity, empathy and global stewardship, initiative and entrepreneurship, problem solving and critical thinking, effective communication skills, agility and adaptability, collaboration across networks, and intentionally engaged learning. The program notes that Write Brain is a project based learning curriculum through which students learn creativity, collaboration, literacy, and more, and that a kindergarten class at Palmquist Elementary created a digital book as part of this work. BASE Programs states that it offers components that support whole child education in academics, athletics, and enrichment, and that California’s Expanded Learning programs engage young people in year round learning opportunities that prepare them for college, career, and life.

The organization identifies itself as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization built on the framework established by the California Department of Education and further designed through education and experience. It describes itself as a network of creative educators with a focus on expanded learning programs and states that expanded learning programs support student success and student growth through the fundamentals of whole child education. BASE Programs reports working closely with school administrators to design intentional programs that focus on student engagement and supplemental learning through the basics of 21st century learning, and it states that it provides students with ways to cultivate these skills and discover their individual interests and talents. The program credits founders Denise and Corie and notes that it has been operating since 2008, with a © 2019 by BASE Programs statement.

BASE Programs describes its community involvement by stating that it is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization made possible through an ongoing partnership with Oceanside Unified School District and the San Diego County Office of Education. The program also references Gavin R Hero as supporting families to stand tall and to see the light in a dark and sad situation.
