Founded in 1972, Environmental Volunteers has a mission to promote the understanding of and responsibility for the environment through hands-on science education. Its school programs include classroom hands-on learning stations and follow-up field trips with guided hikes to local nature preserves, and it offers in-person, hands-on science programs for all grades K–6 in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. The organization runs Sprout Up chapters where volunteer college students convey programs in local elementary schools to connect children with the earth, and it operates the EcoCenter as a public nature center with public learning programs, exhibits, and activities for visitors of all ages. Environmental Volunteers also provides a Transportation Fund that offers affordable and easy-to-schedule transportation for low-income K–12 students in the San Francisco Bay Area who would not otherwise be able to access science and environmental education field trips. It trains volunteers to lead hands-on science and nature programs in schools, community organizations, and at the EcoCenter, and brings fun, hands-on education programs to youth-serving organizations in Silicon Valley, including group programs at the EcoCenter. The organization has worked with partners such as the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula and Catholic Charities Youth Club at St. Francis of Assisi, and serves schools and partners with organizations and companies throughout the Bay Area and beyond. One former volunteer, Maria Amundson, described Environmental Volunteers as effective, well-run, of highest integrity, and a beloved pillar in the communities it serves, and highlighted its work in teaching kids about science, the environment, and conservation.
