Palo Alto Swim School is part of Palo Alto Swim and Sport, which has taught 750,000 lessons in the past 10 years and has been operating in Menlo Park for the past 11 years and for many years before that in Redwood City. The program uses a proprietary way of teaching and a method for delivering lessons that is intended to meet the needs of every student. Instructors go through multiple weeks of training, complete training with a master instructor trainer, are cross-trained with current instructors, and attend ongoing training throughout the year; Master Instructors have over 5 years of experience teaching swim lessons.
The leadership team includes Tim Sheeper, Founder/Owner of Palo Alto Swim and Sport, and Bri Cavanagh, Head of Swim School. Bri has been a swim instructor since 2016, teaching skills from novice to advanced for students as young as 4 months old up to adults, and has been an aquatics manager since 2021, training and developing swim instructors. Alex has been teaching swim lessons and coaching the Bridge Swim Program since 2024, swam competitively for 10 years with PASA, and now rows with NorCal Crew, and has worked with kids since age 12 through babysitting and camp counseling. Andrea has been teaching lessons with the program since 2024, and Arnecia has been teaching lessons since 2019.
Palo Alto Swim School states that it is “all about making a safe splash and helping our community become stronger, more confident swimmers,” and that it believes it is never too early or too late to start learning to swim. The program’s stated goal is to build a strong and robust aquatic culture in a community by introducing youth to the joys of water early in life, instilling solid swim fundamentals, and providing programs that match their development.
Palo Alto Swim and Sport is the exclusive swim lesson and summer swim camp provider for the City of Palo Alto. It partners with the Beyond Barriers Athletic Foundation (BBAF) to offer scholarships to those financially in need who want to develop a life-long love for swimming, and is an affiliate of both BBAF and the Challenged Athlete Foundation (CAF). BBAF will be offering swim lesson scholarships for group swim lessons Levels 1–4.
