About
Youth Stewards includes outdoor activities such as an exploratory “mud day,” nature walks, short hikes, and hands-on nature education. Participants take part in habitat restoration and marshland restoration projects, including moving mulch onto restoration areas and removing the challenging weed fennel that outcompetes biodiversity in local open spaces. The program also involves restoring native plants to open spaces and neighborhoods and stewarding creeks and watersheds through volunteer workdays and after school sessions.
• Ages: 13–18 years old
• Schedule: After school sessions available until April 17, 2026
Grassroots Ecology leads Youth Stewards as part of its mission to engage and educate the public to restore local ecosystems. The program is led by Habitat Restoration Intern Raymundo Salgado, who has maintained and planted in marshland restoration projects, and has led volunteer workdays and nature walks with local students and families. Grassroots Ecology’s first roots were formed in 1997 when Bay Area Action created the Arastradero Stewardship Program, and Grassroots Ecology became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2016. Grassroots Ecology works in collaboration with public landowners, governments, schools, corporations, and other nonprofits, and works in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties on the unceded lands of the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone, Tamien Nation, Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, and Muwekma Ohlone.
In a related 5-week program for 7th graders from the Boys & Girls Club of the Peninsula, 40 students joined Wednesday morning sessions that featured different outdoor activities each week. Habitat Restoration Intern Raymundo Salgado reports that working with younger generations in his community has been very fun and engaging, and that kids in the program gain education about different careers, the importance of habitat restoration, and time outside in their local open space. He also shares that students have expressed thanks and said “this was very fun” at the end of workdays.
