Miracle League North Bay is a non-profit organization created for and dedicated to providing individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in an organized baseball league in a non-competitive atmosphere. The program uses a “buddy” system in which an able-bodied peer is paired with each athlete. The organization states that it cannot change or cure the medical issues life has dealt children and adults with disabilities, and that it focuses on giving them the chance to experience playing baseball, making new friends, building self-esteem, and being treated like an athlete.
The Miracle League North Bay started with a group of parents, athletes, business leaders, and sports fans. In 2015, Phoebe Ellis was introduced to a Miracle League and shared the concept with Jen Richardson, who has a son with special needs, and they then involved Alicia Hansel and John Busick to contribute construction expertise. Together, these four individuals took on the task of creating a Miracle League baseball field and playground in the Bay Area, and in 2015 Phoebe Ellis began working to bring a Miracle League to the Bay Area.
The organization is dedicated to promoting community support and sponsorship through community outreach and fundraising. The Petaluma location opens the Miracle League to participants from Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, Marin, and San Francisco Counties, serving children and adults with disabilities who live less than 40 miles from the site. Several business and community leaders have contributed assistance, expertise, and donations, and volunteers and players are invited to register for upcoming events.
