About
Colors of Spanish offers Spanish immersion through stories, role-playing, dramatization, playful activities, games, rhymes, acting, songs, music, art, traditional Latin-American games, poetry, storytelling, and movement. The program includes specific experiences such as Spanish Music & Movement, a Spanish Immersion adventure to explore nature and culture through the Spanish language, Cuentos con Ritmo, and Early Childhood Spanish Story Time with Music & Movement. Students explore children’s literature in Spanish through stories that include descriptive images, simple and repetitive vocabulary, role-playing, dramatization, and playful activities, and they take home projects developed during the week that add to each family’s celebration and cultural experiences.
• Ages: 1–10 years old
• Schedule: Summer Spanish Immersion for 6–8 and 8–10 year olds consists of week-long sessions, Monday to Friday, and Spanish Music & Movement at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County meets Thursdays at 10:30am PDT.
Colors of Spanish was born in 2004 in Sonoma County and was created in response to the need of many families to raise their children bilingual. The program supports families who wish to pass on and maintain the Spanish language either as a heritage language or as a foreign language, and its name recognizes the diversity and linguistic richness of the Spanish spoken in each country. Colors of Spanish provides educational resources in Spanish to children at an early age through playful learning, including exploration of things and concepts that surround a child’s world, and promotes Spanish from home with songs that facilitate language learning via Spotify.
The Colors of Spanish team is led by Guadalupe Tausch, who has been teaching Spanish to children and young adults since 2003 and has a Master’s degree in Spanish with a focus on the early acquisition of foreign languages. Other team members mentioned are Randy Tausch, Ofelia Arteaga, Ivonne O Borjon, and Vanessa Chial; Ivonne O Borjon has a Child Development Certificate from Santa Rosa Junior College and over 13 years of experience working on School Readiness for children ages 0 to 5 and as a Parent Educator, and Vanessa Chial earned her master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford. In 2011, Guadalupe Tausch was one of seven people named as community leaders, Latina in Petaluma by the Argus Courier.
Colors of Spanish offers early childhood Spanish programs, classes, and resources that introduce children to the richness of the Spanish language and culture in a fun yet educational way, using playful, intuitive methods to improve language skills and inspire creative thinking. Cuentos Mágicos (Magical Stories) is based on the linguistic development of Spanish through stories, and Cuentos con Ritmo is a program for children under 6 and their families to experience the Spanish language through energetic activities, songs, rhymes, and movement, with classes tailored to children 1–5 years old along with adults and the whole family. Colors of Spanish works with community-based services such as libraries and museums, offers Spanish Music & Movement through Sonoma County Library locations and at the Children’s Museum of Sonoma County, and provides Cuentos con Ritmo sponsored by the Regional Public Libraries of Sonoma and Marin counties, along with community and learning partners and resources to help the community raise bilingual families.
Parent feedback includes comments such as a child “absolutely loved” the class and a family “signing up for the entire summer,” appreciation for the instructor’s “fun and amazing” energy and creativity on Zoom and for using music and lyrics so parents and children can sing together, and gratitude that the program continued in a way that still gives children “wonderful exposure” to Spanish.
