American Martial Arts Academy has been a family-owned-and-operated business since 1992. In 1992, founder Shihan Brad Wenneberg, a retired police officer, and his wife Bonnie opened the first martial arts studio, and a second studio in Placentia was opened in 2012. The leadership team includes founder Shihan Brad Wenneberg, co-founder Bonnie, Sensei Jason who leads the flagship dojo, and Senseis Nikhil and Megan Joshi who lead the Placentia dojo. The program includes a Little Ninjas program for ages 3–5, Kids Martial Arts Programs for ages 6–12, a summer camp for ages 5 and up, and an After School Program for all ages. The program offers flexible, mix-and-match classes, flexible schedules for busy families, and an Integrated After School Program with school pick-up and homework help. All instructors are described as extraordinary full-time staff, and the program describes its teachers as top-tier. The studio describes itself as family centered, positive, fun, and caring, with a clean, well-kept establishment. The mission statement is that it provides character-driven instruction that helps children and adults thrive. The American Martial Arts Academy was celebrated as one of the best martial arts studios in the country and has an “In the Community” section referenced on its site. New students are offered a free class and a free uniform.
One parent, Terri G., describes AMAA as warm and inviting, with instructors who are amazing with all age groups and who get kids focused while letting them have fun. Another parent, Brianna B., notes that her 2.5-year-old son has been attending for a few months, that the studio offers flexible class schedules, and that the space is nice and clean inside. A parent and child psychologist, Betsy G., reports seeing maturational changes in her kids and describes classes as fun, upbeat, and energetic, with flexibility in attending classes. Khan S. shares that their 6-year-old daughter was shy at first but quickly wanted to continue with the karate academy and mentions a professional approach and friendly style where families are greeted by name. Holly A. describes American Martial Arts Academy as a home away from home, with excellent, caring staff, a balance of indoor fun activities, local field trips, and weekly park days in summer, and notes that the karate instruction has enabled her children to develop both physically and mentally, along with a clean, well-kept establishment and a community of families.
