About

Kajukenbo Okayama is a mixed martial arts program that includes boxing, kickboxing, karate, jiu-jutsu, judo, kenpo, kung fu, cardio and muscle training, and self-defense. Kids classes teach the same techniques as adult classes but at a slower pace, with attention to listening, reaction, learning ability, memory, and enjoying exercise. Adult classes begin with basic boxing skills and then move on to kickboxing, karate, jiu-jutsu, judo, kenpo, and kung fu techniques as students progress in skill, with a main focus on mixing cardio and muscle training with self-defense skills as taught by the art of Kajukenbo.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

Kajukenbo is a mixed martial art that was established in Hawaii in 1947. The name “Kajukenbo” is an acronym for arts found in its original formation: “Ka” for karate, “Ju” for jiu-jutsu and judo, “Ken” for kenpo, and “Bo” for Western boxing and Chinese “boxing” (also known as kung fu). The original art’s main focus was self-defense, and techniques were included in the system if they worked and were removed if they did not work. The techniques were field tested by the founders, who were in the military and worked as either military police or bouncers and security. Kajukenbo practitioners integrate other styles into their training, and it is not unusual to see elements of styles like Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jutsu, Krav Maga, or Escrima.

Kajukenbo Okayama formed in 2016 in Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. Classes are taught by 5th degree black belt John Hojlo, a student of Grand Master Ron Esteller of San Leandro, California, USA. The leadership team includes John Hojlo as instructor and Grand Master Ron Esteller as the teacher of John Hojlo. The program uses the Kajukenbo motto: “Through this fist art, one gains long life and happiness.”
