Kokua Martial Arts Fitness Academy opened its doors in 2017 and offers programs for both kids and adults. The academy states its mission as “Building a better community one step at a time” and provides Mat Chats to talk with students about life lessons, with kids’ classes focusing on learning life lessons about hard work and discipline. Kokua Martial Arts provides a family atmosphere geared toward self-defense techniques for real-world application and welcomes those interested from the Bay Area.
Founder and Head Instructor Esther Molina is a sixth Degree Black Belt in Kajukenbo and a certified instructor under the United Kajukenbo Federation and the Kajukenbo Self-Defense Institute. The leadership team includes Founder and Head Instructor | 6th Degree Black Belt: Esther Molina; Instructor | 3rd Degree Black Belt: Nels Toriano; Instructor | 3rd Degree Black Belt: Cliff Smith; and Instructor | 3rd Degree Black Belt: Roy Dea. Sifu Tommy has over 30 years of experience in the martial arts, holds a black belt rank in a hybrid style of Chinese Kenpo/Kajukenbo, and is a certified USA Boxing Coach. The Filipino Martial Arts Program uses SGM Harry Greene’s One On One FMA Stick & Knife System and is taught by Chief Instructor Dennis Duarte.
Families can access a paid trial that includes a free uniform, t-shirt, and a 30-minute semi-private lesson. The academy offers 15–20% discounts for military and essential workers, as well as a multi-family discount with the second member at 15% off and 20% off for three or more members. It also offers a promotion to get two months free with sign up and purchase of a uniform and T-shirt. The Women's Only Personal Protection Program is specifically for women and young girls, and the Jeet Kune Do course is for men, women, and teens 13 and older.
