Barry Barker, also known as Mr. B, leads Poway Kenpo Karate and is described as an outstanding teacher who is very knowledgeable and loves to teach and work with groups and individuals. One parent described Poway Kenpo Karate as the best and said their kids had trained there for four years and still enjoyed it. Another parent shared that their son started at age five, later earned his black belt in Kenpo Karate, and that their family built lasting friendships with the Barker family and other families at the school. Multiple parents and students describe the instructors and program as fantastic, highly qualified, respectful to students and parents, and supportive and friendly.

Several testimonials describe Barry Barker’s leadership as a key part of Poway Kenpo Karate, with one person stating that no other martial arts studio they had seen came close to what he built. Parents and students mention that the kids enjoy attending class, have fun, and learn at the same time. One parent noted that their child practiced hard at home for a tournament, earned first-place medals, and that his attitude and grades improved, including becoming a straight-A student and part of the GATES program. Another parent reported that their son advanced to blue belt after starting at age five and that they were proud to be part of the Poway Kenpo Karate family.

The broader Poway Martial Arts community is described in testimonials as having an amazing team, a friendly staff, and instructors who love what they do. One student with overseas competition experience stated that they would not join a gym unless they thought it was the absolute best and that this place met that standard for them. Families describe the environment as like having a second family, with an atmosphere of respect, camaraderie, support, and friendship under the examples set by Mr. and Mrs. Barker. Another comment notes that they have something for everyone in the family and that they are considered an asset to the community.

Poway Martial Arts also offers a free self-defense class for women, which some attendees took with their daughters and described as very hands-on and physical. Participants in these classes said they learned a lot, appreciated the time and generosity of the instructors, and felt the class was offered for a good cause.
