About

Summer Day Camp includes time for kids to explore garden, field, creek, and river environments, dig in the dirt, smell herbs, and taste fresh fruits and vegetables. Campers learn how to grow food and flowers, harvest produce, cook up tasty food, and create delicious recipes with the culinary arts team. Activities also include hiking and exploring Cordova Creek and the American River Parkway, meeting the chickens, and using stories, songs, crafts, and games to learn about the farm, as well as crafting and harvesting to prepare a Farmers Market Party for families and friends.

Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture & Education Project began as a for-profit farm in 2000 and became a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in November 2004. The organization’s mission is to create an urban agriculture and education project that empowers youth and adults to discover and participate in a local food system that encourages healthy living, nurtures the environment, and grows a sustainable community. Summer Day Camp scholarships are provided by Board members, private donors, and contributors to the scholarship fund, and full or partial scholarships are welcomed. The leadership team includes Co-Founders Shawn Harrison (Director), Marco Franciosa, and Janet Whalen Zeller (Director). Soil Born Farms has developed several education and food access programs in partnership with area schools and agencies, and participates in Harvest Sacramento, which gathers underutilized fruit and vegetables from backyards and small orchards and donates them to local food assistance agencies.
