The RYC Youth Programs build fleets of young sailors, 8–18 years old, using current and effective curriculum. These programs focus on sailing skills, seamanship and sportsmanship while teaching youngsters to care for their equipment, and they develop lifelong boating skills, self-confidence and respect towards others. Classes are taught in Optimists, El Toros, Lasers, FJs/420s and J22s, and a limited number of Club El Toros, Optimist, Lasers, and FJs/420s are available for use by new students. Scholarships are available for sailors through RYC or the RYC Foundation, and the program relies on volunteers to keep costs reasonable for all.

Richmond Yacht Club was formed in 1932, and the club began its Junior Program in 1952. The award winning Junior Program runs on Sundays from October to March and teaches junior sailors, ages 8–18, to safely enjoy and have fun learning the art and sport of sailing. The RYC Junior Program has received the Garrett Horder Trophy (2019) for the most innovative juniors program on the west coast from Canada to San Diego, and the Admiral Chester W. Nimitz U.S.N. Perpetual Trophy in multiple years for making the greatest advancement in promoting youth activity in yachting, including instruction in boat handling proficiency, seamanship and safety.

The leadership team connected with this program includes Sailing Director Will Paulsen; General Manager and Bar and Galley Manager Curtis Lew; Harbormaster Mark Vandenberg; Commodore Jim Quanci; Vice Commodore Greg Mitchell; Rear Commodore John Paulling; Secretary Lynn Branstad; Port Captain Chris Straub; Treasurer Michele Logan; and Directors Ira Potekhina, Anne Thomas, Velina Barnes, and Bob Johnston.
