The Salvation Army Summer Camps are summer camps for kids from low-income households, and most camps accept state-provided child care subsidies. Scholarships are available to help families offset the cost. Camp programs include supervision by trained counselors who are equipped to help children navigate complicated emotions and struggles related to poverty, and who are trained to recognize the effects of stressors of poverty on children and respond to a child’s emotional needs so kids feel safe, included, and welcome. The Salvation Army states that summer camp provides a beneficial reprieve from nature deprivation and can have a positive impact on a child's self-esteem, confidence, and overall well-being. The Salvation Army is one of the largest social service providers in the United States and serves local families through Kroc Community Centers, after-school programs, summer camps, and more. The Salvation Army describes itself as an international movement and an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church, with a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
