About
Christian Youth Theater (CYT) Sacramento offers after-school theater arts training that includes drama, voice, and dance classes, as well as specialty theatrical workshops and behind-the-scenes training in makeup, costumes, and tech. Students enrolled in classes can audition to perform in Broadway-style musical productions or participate on backstage crew, the technical team, or as an usher, and each class session ends with a showcase for family and friends. During the summer, the program runs week-long musical theater day camps that include games, activities, interactive workshops in drama, dance, and music, team competitions, Find Your Character lessons, and an end-of-session showcase.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes for ages 5–18 run in three ten-week sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring), meeting once a week for two hours; each session includes one Broadway-style musical, and summer offerings include week-long musical theater day camps; CYT@school sessions consist of eight 2-hour classes.
• Price: Registration fee for the HYPE yearlong program is $150, divided into three payments for fall, winter, and spring.
Christian Youth Theater was founded in 1980, and Wendy Hoover co-founded CYT Sacramento in 2012 after having been one of the original students in the founding years of CYT San Diego. CYT has grown to be a national program with Branches across the country training thousands of students a year, and each Branch’s yearly calendar is made up of three ten-week sessions in Fall, Winter, and Spring. The CYT Decathlon Award recognizes students ages 16–18 who have completed a well-rounded theater arts education consistent with CYT values, according to the CYT National Decathlon Award Document.
The CYT Sacramento leadership team includes Wendy Hoover (Artistic Director & Co-Founder, Board Member), Shelly Tuck (Managing Director), Rachael Durling (Marketing Director), Jinnae Stuckey (Programs Director), Christina (Tina) MacNeill (Storage Coordinator), and Bonny Verner (Folsom Show Coordinator). Instructors are described as professionals qualified in teaching and/or performing, and individual leaders have backgrounds in music, theater performance and direction, education, administration, tourism and hospitality, and accounting. CYT@school is a low-cost after-school performing arts program in public and private schools, with eight 2-hour classes that include drama, voice, and dance training, weekly Find Your Character lessons on specific character traits, and an end-of-session showcase with highlights from a recognizable family-friendly show.
CYT states that it develops character and creativity through quality theater arts training that brings families and communities together while reflecting Jesus. HYPE is a yearlong leadership program for high school youth involved in CYT, with bi-weekly meetings and participation by application, and its stated goal is for students to serve the community within CYT and beyond. CYT Sacramento uses the Safety Scene program, Kidpower resources, and reporting resources on abuse and suicide prevention, and states that it is committed to maintaining a community free of harassment, misconduct, or abuse, including verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual.
A CYT student, Savannah Cunningham, states, “I am constantly reminded of how loved I am. CYT fosters a community of support and encouragement, shaped by its people and their effort to reflect the message of Jesus.”
