About

Take Note Troupe offers Shakespeare in the Park productions, improv classes including the On The Spot Improv team, PLAY THEORY workshops, and a musical each fall. The program also produces musicals for elementary and middle-school aged children, summer camps, and MainStage and Children’s Theater productions. Past and planned shows include a scaled down production of The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, and The Taming of the Shrew in a Bollywood style adaptation.

• Ages: 8–18 years old

In 2003, two teens asked their mothers to teach them about Shakespeare, and their backyard production of The Tempest grew into an annual community tradition of Shakespeare in the Park. Take Note Troupe’s founder is LaRee Florence. Take Note Troupe teaches PLAY THEORY principles based on improv rules and cognitive behavior therapy that focus on Being Present, Letting Go and Playing, Accepting and Building, and Looking Outward. The organization states that its original methodology, PLAY THEORY, instills a positive paradigm that cultivates hope, generosity, and validation of self and others while combating negative cynicism in current culture. Take Note Troupe produces family friendly, principle-based productions and PLAY THEORY workshops, and states that participants gain confidence, discover talents, develop leadership skills, and provide service in their community. Take Note Troupe is a not for profit 501(c)(3) and is vendored with Horizon, Cottonwood, Sequoia Grove, South Sutter, Clarksville, and Feather River.

Over the years, Take Note Troupe has mentored hundreds of youth and served thousands more in the community. In 2025, it gave eight free-to-the-public performances of Much Ado About Nothing in Roseville, Rocklin, Fair Oaks, and Folsom, with nearly 5,000 people attending. Its “varsity” improv team, On The Spot, performs monthly for the public. For most of the last twelve years, Take Note Troupe members have given a free, weekly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy workshop using PLAY THEORY for at-risk youth in Koinonia foster programs. One parent reported that PLAY THEORY changed the trajectory of their child’s life, helping them manage anxiety and overcome fears after bullying. Another parent shared that PLAY THEORY gave their shy daughter the confidence to sing out and share her talents, and a participant described the group as talented, validating, and supportive, which they attributed to PLAY THEORY.
