Faith Formation for Children (Religious Education, First Communion, Confirmation)

Faith Formation for Children (Religious Education, First Communion, Confirmation) includes religious education, sacramental preparation, First Communion preparation, and Confirmation preparation. Children take part in online lessons on faith, acts of service, prayer, Bible reading, and attending an off-site Confirmation retreat as part of the Confirmation preparation program. The religious education program uses the “Word of Life” materials presented by the Augustine Institute and Ignatius Press, with an age-appropriate focus on salvation history, Christian anthropology, heroic virtue and character formation, and learning through discipleship.

• Ages: 6–14 years old
• Schedule: Religious Education classes for elementary school students and 6th graders meet most Sunday mornings at 8:50 am from mid-September through mid-May; First Communion classes meet most Sunday mornings at 8:50 am during the school year; Confirmation students meet in person at 4:30 pm approximately twice per month on Sunday evenings for class and Mass during the school year.

First Communion is a two-year preparation program beginning in 1st grade and continuing in 2nd grade, and in anticipation of making their First Holy Communion, students also make their First Reconciliation (Confession). First Communion students are expected to attend Mass each weekend, and the 8 am and 10 am Sunday Masses work well with the timing of the classes. Confirmation is a two-year preparation program beginning in 7th grade and continuing in 8th grade, with additional preparation work completed outside of class, including online lessons on faith, acts of service, prayer, Bible reading, and attending an off-site Confirmation retreat each year. Registration for Religious Education, First Holy Communion preparation, and the 2026–27 Confirmation preparation program is open. The religious education and sacramental preparation programs at St. Anselm church are based on the teachings of the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic church. Parents can meet with the Director of Religious Education by making a phone appointment.
