About
The Afterschool Tutoring & Enrichment Program for Afghan Youth offers homework help, study skills, and tutoring in core subjects. The program also includes engaging learning experiences, leadership and life skills development, and social and recreational opportunities.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Meets twice a week on weekday evenings and weekend mornings
SALAM’s mission is to practice and promote Islam by providing religious, educational and recreational facilities and services for members of the public. The program is funded by the ARSI Grant Supporting Afghan Youth. It is part of SALAM, a tax-exempt, non-profit 501(c)(3) religious organization dedicated to promoting Islamic teachings, understanding, and unity among Muslims in the Greater Sacramento community. The program is designed for Afghan youth ages 5–18 who arrived after July 31, 2021, and programs are held in English. SALAM strongly advocates for women to attend all events and does not enforce segregation of the sexes.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Arwa Houry and Founder Dr. Metwalli Amer. Additional leadership and staff roles include Outreach & Learning Director Asif Haq and Office Assistant Mohamed Jamil. Religious leadership includes Imam, SALAM Shaykh Achour El-Qaddoury and Guest Imam Dr. Khalid Sayedi. The board includes Chairperson Sarah Bouabibsa, Vice Chairperson Omar Altamimi, Secretary Youcef Sari, Treasurer Abdurrahman Husnein, and Board Members Dr. Khalid Sayedi, Bashir Ahmed, Shaista Rauf, and Abdul-Qawiy Abdul-Karim. SALAM is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
