Capitol Ballet Center offers classes that include Pre-Dance, Ballet 1, Ballet 2, Ballet 3, Ballet 4/5/6, Pre-Pointe, Pointe 1, Pointe 2/3, and Pilates. Capitol Ballet Center is connected to Capitol Ballet Company, a non-profit, pre-professional ballet company directed by Stuart Carroll and Sharon Newton since 1999. Capitol Ballet Center trains ages 4 to adult and inspires intermediate and advanced level dancers to join the company and perform, thereby preparing them for professional careers in ballet. Classes and levels include Pre-Dance for ages 3 and up, Ballet 1 for ages 6 and up, Ballet 2 for ages 8 and up, Ballet 3 for ages 10 and up, Ballet 4/5/6 for ages 14–18 and up, along with Pre-Pointe, Pointe 1, Pointe 2/3, and Pilates.
Stuart Carroll is the Artistic Director of Capitol Ballet Company and has presented full-length ballets such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, Paquita, La Bayadere, and Don Quixote with support and funding from the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and the California Arts Council. His background includes guest artist roles with American Ballet Theatre at the Metropolitan Opera House and with Milwaukee Ballet Company, international touring, and work as a first soloist with Basel Ballet in Switzerland. He has taught at institutions including the University of California Davis Department of Theater and Dance and the Paul Taylor West Coast Dance Intensive, and he was nominated in Spring 2012 by the UC Davis Academic Senate for an Excellence in Teaching Award.
Sharon Newton co-founded Capitol Ballet Center and Capitol Ballet Company in 1999 and is described as a respected artist and accomplished dancer and teacher. Her experience includes principal and soloist roles with companies such as Garden State Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, Arizona Dance Theater, Cincinnati Ballet, and Basel Ballet, as well as extensive teacher training under ballet pedagogue Gabriella Darvash. She has held teaching positions including Principal Teacher at the Darvash Ballet School in New York City and Guest Teacher roles at Broadway Dance Center, Ballet Hispanico’s school, Dance Masters of America, and local arts programs in Sacramento.
Capitol Ballet Company brings the beauty and artistry of ballet to a diverse audience of art lovers, with pre-professional dancers performing at venues throughout the Central Valley region of California. The company presents the full-length ballet of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker every December and each spring presents various classical ballets and contemporary premieres, including dances from younger ballet students. Its expanding repertoire includes works such as Swan Lake, Giselle, Paquita, La Bayadere, Le Corsaire Pas de Trois, Don Quixote, Les Sylphides, Sylvia, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Coppelia, and Markitenka, along with premieres like Grofe Variations, Dvorak Serenade, Sweet Debussy, Spanish Rhapsody, and Pastorale for Guitar and Ascension, and newer additions such as Les Patineurs, Shostakovich, and Sweet and Low.
Capitol Ballet is funded in part by the Cultural Arts Awards Grant of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission with support from the City and County of Sacramento. The organization states that it aspires to produce quality ballet performances and to instill an appreciation of dance and the arts throughout the Greater Sacramento region, serving over 3,000 individuals most years through performances and outreach. It provides outreach with free tickets, presentations, and discounted performances to under-served or confined individuals, including those affected by chronic conditions, disabilities, age, or income, and works with organizations that serve these individuals. Many former company dancers have been accepted into professional ballet companies such as Texas Ballet Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, BalletMet, San Diego Ballet, and Smuin Ballet.
