About
Cal North Soccer Programs and Competitions offers competitive soccer, recreational soccer, and grassroots programming. The program includes regional and national level soccer competitions, Real Madrid Foundation Soccer Camps, the Cal North State Cup, the Cup Series, MLS NEXT, the Olympic Development Program (ODP), and events such as the U13–U19 State Cup and the U12 National Championships event.
Cal North was established in 1969 by Donald Greer and was the prototype and predecessor for other state soccer associations as well as for the formation of US Youth Soccer in 1974, also founded by Donald Greer. The mission of Cal North is for its Nine Districts to lead world class membership support with resources to help members score their goals as leaders in Northern California. Cal North is a member-driven organization composed of more than 250 leagues and clubs, over 30,000 coaches and administrators, and more than 125,000 players and their parents. Cal North is the only state association in the country that is a league operator of MLS NEXT and notes that Cal North State Cup is the designated state-level qualifier for the US Youth Soccer National Championships, with U13–U19 State Cup Champions advancing directly to Nationals and U12 Champions advancing to the U12 National Championships event in June 2026 for the 2025–2026 season. The Cup Series is comprised of five events, each designed to accommodate players of different skill levels, and Cal North offers programs for elite level players, competitive players, and players with specialized needs. Cal North also offers Cal North College, which is described as giving members tools to succeed in a modern soccer landscape, and provides a comprehensive set of member benefits in addition to health and safety protocols related to the safety, health, and overall well being of players.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Marley Wilson, Creative Director Javier Arellano, Coaching Education & ODP Managing Director Joyce Bordley, Technical Director of Coaching Education Jeremy Williams, Business Operations Manager Devon Yoakam, District 2 Administrator Amin Fazal, District 3/4 Administrator Fred Wilson, Assistant District 3/4 Administrator Tyler Darke, District 5 Administrator Dane Denkers, District 7 Administrator Linda Sorelle, and District 8 Administrator Shanon Gallant. Jeremy Williams is a U.S. Soccer Coach Educator who holds a USSF A License, a United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma, and a Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on curriculum design and assessment. Dane Denkers is a USSF Grassroots licensed coach who is currently working on his D License.
Cal North describes itself as offering competitive and recreational soccer regardless of skill level or ability, along with grassroots programming and competitive playing opportunities at the regional and national levels, and states that its programming is designed to help find the right opportunities for players in the soccer community. Cal North notes that it offers competition opportunities and works to accommodate the unique needs of Soccer Without Borders teams made up of recently arrived refugee and immigrant students, and that Clovis Junior Soccer League has been part of the Cal North family for 46 years. One testimonial from Clovis Junior Soccer League states that the league has been part of the Cal North family for 46 years and mentions professionalism and support from the state office and staff as a main reason for continuing the partnership. Another testimonial from Soccer Without Borders states that the organization has partnered with Cal North for 12 years, that Cal North provides teams with positive, formal competition opportunities through annual tournaments and ongoing leagues, and that Soccer Without Borders teams look forward to the annual Founder's Cup and Association Cup as larger tournaments available to recreational level teams.
