Yemaso Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy was founded in 2011 to serve the greater Sacramento area and is described as a world class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts academy. The academy’s aim is to provide a structured and disciplined institution where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is taught with clarity, precision, and accountability, and its vision includes supporting students in doing their personal best, creating bonds with students, supporting health through jiu-jitsu exercise, and building a strong Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition team. It is described as the most competitively successful Brazilian Jiu Jitsu institution in the Sacramento region and the most successful BJJ school in the Sacramento area, and it became the first and only Sacramento-based Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu team to secure an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) team trophy, with champions at every belt level and across kids, juvenile, adult, masters, and seniors divisions.
The academy is led by Marcos “Yemaso” Torregrosa, a Sacramento BJJ instructor, 3-time World Champion, 5th-degree black belt, owner, and professor who teaches classes for both recreational Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners and BJJ champion athletes, and he is described as currently ranked 1st in the world. The environment is described as competition-oriented, beginner friendly, very female friendly, and a thinking person’s school with a focus on both physical and mental aspects. Students can take part in activities outside the school such as big group dinners to Fuji’s sushi, birthday get-togethers at local bars and clubs, and UFC fight nights at people’s houses.
According to parent and student reviews, families describe the academy as welcoming, with teens helping younger children, and mention that the gym is open to male and female students, kids and adults, with morning and evening classes and clean mats and bathrooms. Reviewers also describe tough warm-ups and practices, standup training, attention to basic drills and fundamental positions for beginners, and instruction that is described as demanding, efficient, and focused on clear explanation of technique. One review notes that the schedule includes a 5 am class, and another highlights that the one month free trial allows new students to try classes before paying.
For a first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, families are advised to bring comfortable athletic clothing, a water bottle, and a positive mindset, and if attending a gi class without owning a gi yet, regular workout clothes are described as fine for the first visit.
