Laura Childress founded Bike Adventures for Kids in 2006 and started the program 18 years ago. Laura is a former head coach of the Drake Mountain Bike Team, is currently a head coach for the Archie Williams Mountain Bike Team, is a registered nurse, and is Wilderness First Aid Certified. Hannah Childress is a seasoned veteran at Bike Adventures for Kids, a former racer and captain of the Drake High School Mountain Bike Team, the NorCal Mountain Bike League’s 2017 Achievement Award recipient, and the Head Coach of the Fairfax Fat Tire Flyers Mountain Bike Development Team. Bike Adventures for Kids is women-owned and run, and many kids return year after year as campers and then as counselors.
Laura has been inspired by the dedication and perseverance of high schoolers as they train and race rain or shine through her work with the Drake Mountain Bike Team and the Archie Williams Mountain Bike Team. Hannah has been part of the NorCal Mountain Bike League community, has participated in several NorCal MTB Trail Stewardship Camps, and sees many of her campers join the NorCal MTB League at the middle school level and then move into high school competition and beyond.
The program’s mission states that Bike Adventures for Kids starts a child’s summer of fun, with kids discovering possibilities for adventure in their own backyard and feeling the freedom of exploring Marin’s outdoors by bike, with an emphasis on teamwork, confidence building, and bike handling. The mission also states that Laura believes riding bikes should be fun whether a child likes to “shred” or just take in the scenery.
Parents are asked to have their child’s bike safety checked several weeks before camp to be sure it is in good running order. Riders classified as “Littles” must have a bike with at least 6 gears, hand brakes, and 20 inch wheels, must be able to ride in a straight line down the street, must be able to tell when they need to use the bathroom, and must be 4–6 years old. For camp, each child needs on their body a helmet, gloves, glasses, a short sleeve shirt, close-toed shoes, and a light jacket, and in their backpack a backpack, hydration pack, lunch, extra snacks, a tube that fits their tire, money for ice cream, and a bathing suit.
Testimonials from parents describe their children facing new challenges, polishing riding skills, and enjoying the group’s daily adventures, with one parent noting that two sons at different skill levels both found the camp fit them well. Another parent calls it the “Best bike camp ever!!”. A third parent describes a child starting the week as a very tentative bike rider and finishing as a confident rider who enjoys getting on a bike and who learned safety and motivational lessons, and also describes Laura as a great teacher and role model for a girl.
