About
San Anselmo Cooperative Nursery School offers a flexible daily routine where children play inside and outside, read stories, sing songs, role play, and take part in puppet shows. Children explore science, art, and cooking projects set up by parents, as well as painting and exploring the “Creation Station” with a lead teacher. Outdoor activities include flying high on the swings, climbing the playground and climbing wall, getting dirty in the mud kitchen, being creative in the theater space, safely riding along the bike path, climbing gnome hill, watering the wildflower garden, tending to seasonal tomato plants, making volcanoes in the sandbox, and playing dress up on the deck.
• Ages: 2.5–6 years old
• Schedule: Morning program four days per week from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m., with an Aftercare Program Monday–Thursday from about 12:00–4:00 p.m. and a Pre-K program on Friday afternoons
San Anselmo Cooperative Nursery School is a non-profit, non-sectarian, parent-run organization that aims to foster physical, emotional, intellectual, and social growth in each child. Parents work in the classroom weekly in partnership with the Co-op Director and lead teachers, and snack is provided and prepared by one of the parents, always including an organic fruit or vegetable, a starch, and a protein, with hands thoroughly washed before snack. The staff in the morning program includes the morning director, one teacher, and five parent aides, and the Aftercare Program is run by two experienced teachers with no more than 14 children per day and fewer students and a slower pace than the morning program.
Eligible children are as young as 2 years and 6 months old and can be up to 6 years old, and children must be toilet-trained to be accepted. The program includes a morning circle with a social-emotional learning activity, younger and older group structure during snack and circle time, and a Final Goodbye Circle at the end of the day. Enrollment includes up to 31 children and their families, and the program offers a Pre-K option on Friday afternoons for children who are 4.5 years old and moving on to kindergarten, with a more structured format and activities that are slightly more academic in focus.
San Anselmo Cooperative Nursery School has been providing a unique experience for young children and their parents to learn and grow alongside one another since 1947 and is celebrating more than 75 years with the community. The school welcomes families of all races, colors, religions, and national and ethnic origins without regard to sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. Community connections include bringing in outside educators throughout the year for special circle time learning, such as outside music teachers, Tracy the Animal Guy, local firefighters, dancers from the Nutcracker, and dentists, as well as field trips to the fire station, post office, a nearby grocery store, and Robson Harrington Park. The program operates under License #210105114.
