About
After School offers daily activities such as arts and crafts, baking a treat, playing outdoors, doing homework, and reading a book. The program includes Homework Club, which runs for approximately one hour, as well as special events like Friday Fun Nite, pajama parties, pizza and art activities, and movie and popcorn nights. Children enrolled in After School may also take part in enrichment classes such as Spanish and tennis, and occasional themed events like Sing A Longs, Willy Wonka Days, and Talent Shows.
• Ages: 4–11 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday after school until 6:00 PM
After School has been providing licensed day care to families since 1981 and has been serving the San Carlos and Belmont communities for over 40 years. It is a fully licensed day care and after school program that meets and exceeds the criteria set by the State of California for licensed childcare centers serving school age children. The program limits enrollment to three or five days per week and does not accept drop-ins or short-term participants. Snack menus are posted monthly at each classroom site, and a healthy afternoon snack each day always includes fresh fruit or vegetables. The program also celebrates milestones such as birthdays or a lost tooth, recognizes good sportsmanship and outstanding behavior with special awards, and includes different cultures in activities, such as Grandma Latke, handmade tortillas on Cinco de Mayo, and Gung Hay Fat Choy celebrations. On-site enrichment classes are provided by private contractors at several schools, and parents register through the school district and inform the Site Manager which outside classes their child is taking. Friday Fun Nite events are offered about four or five times per year, include special activities and a movie night, are limited in size, and are open only to current enrollees and their siblings.
After School was started with the mission of providing a safe, caring, and fun place for kids to go after they get out of school, with a child-oriented atmosphere that caters to the unique needs of each child. The program states that it is committed to providing a place where kids have someone who knows and cares about them, a healthy snack, quiet space and time for homework, outdoor play, access to games, toys, books, art supplies, and building blocks to express individuality and spark imagination, and time to choose activities or do nothing after a long day at school.
Owners of After School are Anthony Perino (Owner and Site Manager), Kenny Meade (Owner and Site Manager), and Liz Benedict (Owner and Site Manager). Site Managers and key contacts include Liz Benedict and Jose Ibarra at Arundel Elementary School, Nancy Viducic and Kenny Meade at Heather Elementary School, Jennie Fitzgerald and Nicole Cucolichio at Brittan Acres Elementary School, Angela Thompson and Yulie/Yulisa Chavez at White Oaks Elementary School, Katrina (Kat) San Felipe at Central Elementary School, and Jessica Cummings at Fox Elementary School. On average, staff stay with After School for at least five years. All full-time staff members have early childhood education backgrounds and extensive experience working with school age children, meet and exceed State of California criteria for licensed childcare centers serving school age children, and have up-to-date training in Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and Infectious Disease and Disaster Preparedness.
After School serves the San Carlos and Belmont communities and is housed at multiple local elementary schools in these communities. Testimonials from parents and children describe staff as friendly, note that children are engaged and happily playing, and state that children enjoy being at the program and often do not want to leave at pick-up.
