About
Twin Dragon Academy offers martial arts training in the Dragon Fist Combat System, including martial art drills, blocks, strikes, kicks, open-hand forms, self-defense techniques, and martial arts weapons. Students may also train with the Escrima Stick and in stick and knife-fighting as part of the curriculum.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Class options Monday–Thursday afternoons and early evenings, and Saturday mornings to early afternoons
Twin Dragon Academy has over 25 years of teaching martial arts in the Bay Area. Students are trained in the Dragon Fist system founded by Grandmaster Sijo John Oliva, which incorporates elements from Serrada Escrima, Wing Chun, and Kempo Karate, with its greatest influence from Hung Gar Kung Fu, emphasizing low stances and powerful strikes and blocks. The curriculum is taught at a level appropriate to both the age and stage of development of each student, and each belt level has its own curriculum and requirements to achieve the next rank or level. Students are monitored and constantly evaluated to see where they are in each rank, and they are tested for the next rank only with the Head Instructor’s approval and only when the instructors feel that the student is truly ready. The organization strongly encourages not chasing the belts and states that it is the student that makes the belt, not the belt that makes the student. The stated mission is that, regardless of the students’ level, each program will always emphasize coordination, discipline, strength, and self-defense.
Tiger Tot is an age- and stage-specific martial arts program for the 3½–5-year-old child and uses martial arts to help children develop physically and mentally in a fun and caring environment. Pee Wee classes consist of dynamic movement and martial art drills that increase strength, awareness, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Junior students study the fundamentals of the Dragon Fist System, and as early as solid yellow belt, Junior students begin to learn their first weapon, the Escrima Stick; by purple belt ranking, Hung Gar Kung Fu makes up the majority of the curriculum. Adult students learn the Dragon Fist System with a greater emphasis on practical self-defense and combat as well as martial arts weapons, and adult students are taught an expansive combat curriculum drawing from Wing Chun, Aikido, and Serrada Escrima (stick and knife-fighting). The leadership team includes Senior Instructor Sifu Aaron, Head Instructor Sensei Tommy, Head Instructor Sensei Kyle, Head Instructor Sensei Paola, and Grandmaster Sijo John Oliva, founder of the Dragon Fist system. A free trial class is offered.
