California State Games has hosted its Olympic-style event since 1988 and is described as the largest amateur sports festival in the state. It is presented by National University and operates as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. As a community-based member of the United States Olympic Committee, it is part of a network in which California is one of 29 states that conduct similar statewide competitions through the National Congress of State Games. The mission of California State Games is to promote and nurture the health, education, and competitive spirit of residents of California by managing a quality amateur sports event that encourages participation and provides an Olympic experience.
California State Games includes 19 sports competitions in San Diego on July 17–20, 2025, as part of the California State Summer Games presented by National University. The California Winter Games are held in San Diego in February and March with three participating sports. The event features Opening Ceremonies at Pechanga Arena with an athlete parade, Lighting of the Cauldron, and fireworks, as well as a torch lighting ceremony at Pechanga Arena for hockey athletes. Athletes of the Year are chosen within their sport competitions, and winners are nominated for the National Congress of State Games Athlete of the Year program.
Gymnasts at California State Games receive a free California State Games leotard. Figure skating participants are invited to a Figure Skating After Party at Ringers Roller Rink, which offers free entry for athletes and includes roller skating, games, music, and a celebration. A tailgate hosted by the San Diego Gulls is held, followed by their AHL game.
California State Games is managed by Sports San Diego. Sports San Diego is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) that produces the Trust & Will Holiday Bowl, the Rady Children’s Invitational, and California State Games, and recruits, supports, and hosts world-class sports events. The Games are funded in part by the San Diego Tourism Marketing District Corporation with City of San Diego Tourism Marketing District assessment funds, and the organization states that community support and Cal State Games Partners have a profound impact on the success of the Games.
