About
Kids’ Turn San Diego Programs include Family Workshops for separated and divorced families, Counseling for Children, military family groups, seminars and community trainings. Family Workshops are a co-parenting program for separated and divorced families, and co-parents and children are encouraged to attend these workshops together. Cooperative Co-Parenting is described as a high conflict co-parenting program for parents only, and Counseling for Children is a counseling program for children who graduated from the Family Workshop program or who are experiencing family separations and related challenges.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
Kids’ Turn San Diego was created in 1996 to bring peace to families who could no longer communicate without conflict. The mission of Kids’ Turn San Diego is “promoting, supporting and securing the well-being of children who are experiencing family separation,” and the programs change family relationships in positive ways so children are happier. Kids’ Turn San Diego empowers children to express their feelings and thoughts, and children learn that their parents’ separation is not their fault and learn new ways to understand their family situation. Parents gain insight about how their words and behaviors impact their children and learn new skills and strategies to improve communication and interactions for the whole family.
A 12-year-old Family Workshop graduate shared that they learned it was not their fault that their parents got divorced, learned how to share and handle their feelings better, and noticed their parents being nicer to each other and getting along better. A parent from the Family Workshop described the program as very insightful and said it was enjoyable to share and listen to other parents and learn from one another, with a takeaway about showing children how to cope, adapt, lead, love and be compassionate. An 8-year-old Family Workshop graduate said that, after the program, they told their parents they wanted more attention, and reported that their parents shifted attention away from their cell phones to playing games and watching movies with them.
