Kids’ Turn San Diego was created in 1996. Its mission is “promoting, supporting and securing the well-being of children who are experiencing family separation,” and it states that it changes family relationships in positive ways so children are happier. The organization states that it empowers children to express their feelings and thoughts, to learn that their parents’ separation is not their fault and to learn new ways to understand their family situation, and that parents who attend programs gain insight about how their words and behaviors impact their children and learn new skills and strategies to improve communication and interactions for the whole family. The program also offers military family groups, seminars and community trainings.

One 12-year-old Family Workshop graduate shared that they learned it was not their fault that their parents got divorced, learned how to share and handle their feelings better, and that their parents are nicer to each other and getting along better, saying “This program really worked!” A parent from the Family Workshop described it as very insightful and said it was enjoyable to share and listen to other parents and learn from one another, and that their takeaway was that it is critical to continue to show children how to cope, adapt, lead, love and be compassionate. An 8-year-old Family Workshop graduate shared that, after the program, they told their parents they wanted more attention, and that now their parents pay attention, play games, and watch movies with them, and that they are very happy about this change.
