San Diego-Imperial Council Scouting Programs have been serving the youth of the San Diego and Imperial Valley region since 1916 and encompass San Diego and Imperial Counties, an area of over 7,500 square miles. The programs serve over 6,000 youth in 350 units and are supported by over 4,000 registered and trained adult volunteers, with more than 50,000 hours of community service reported. The council offers Cub Scouts for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, Scouts BSA as a traditional Scouting experience, Venturing as a youth-led and youth-inspired program, Sea Scouts as a co-ed nautical program, Exploring with activities and mentorship for youth exploring future paths, and Scoutreach as an outreach division for families for whom traditional units may not be financially feasible or geographically accessible. The council also offers a High Adventure program that provides leadership training and activities beyond basic camping experiences.
The mission of San Diego-Imperial Council Scouting Programs is to encourage responsible fun and adventure, instill sound morals and values in young people, foster citizenship, service, and leadership, and inspire the next generation of leaders to serve their communities. The council reports partnerships with various organizations, businesses, and community groups to better serve its scouts. The leadership team includes Scout Executive Sean Roy, Council President Joe Minner, and Council Commissioner Mike Byerline. Staff member Jeremy completed Emergency Medical Technician training in the San Diego area and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy with a focus on Emergency Management and Homeland Security from Arizona State University.
The council describes community involvement that includes collaboration with the County of San Diego to create an enhanced park facility that can be used by Scouts, community organizations, and families. One testimonial from Aliénor Alexander states that in scouting she learned leadership, preparedness, professional and networking skills, communication, and perseverance, and that these helped her in college and in gaining an internship at Casa Cornelia, a pro bono law firm representing people seeking asylum in the United States. Another testimonial about Juliana Murillo states that she credits her scouting experience with enabling her to make lifelong memories, serve the Scouting community across the country, and develop her passion for public service. A testimonial about Eden Tillotson states that she credits the first aid skills she learned in Scouting with empowering her to respond to emergency situations and inspiring her interest in medicine as a possible career.
