About
Camp Connect offers sibling visits, monthly events, and a multi-night summer camp for brothers and sisters who are separated in the foster care system. At this camp, siblings take part in activities such as ice skating, going to a museum, attending a ball game, horseback riding, swimming, music therapy, and zip lining. The second half of Summer Camp is open to all youth in care, and eligibility is not dependent on having a separated sibling.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Since 2008, Camp Connect has supported brothers and sisters who are separated in the foster care system through sibling visits, monthly events, and a 4-day/3-night summer camp; starting in 2023, Camp Connect increased sibling camp to 6-days/5-nights.
Since 2008, Camp Connect has supported brothers and sisters who are separated in the foster care system through sibling visits, monthly events, and a 4-day/3-night summer camp. Camp Connect is a result of Promises2Kids and the County of San Diego researching ways to support children in maintaining their family bonds when it is impossible for them to live together in the same placement. Camp Connect serves over 261 foster youth each year, and following summer camp, it hosts a variety of monthly activities or outings that give separated brothers and sisters continued time together. Many children placed in foster care are separated from their siblings, and Camp Connect states that it ensures they have the opportunity to visit and maintain their relationship with each other. Children not only spend time with their siblings at Camp Connect, but also with adult mentors.
Hundreds of San Diegans volunteer their time and energy to work Camp Connect events each year, dedicating themselves to these foster children and supporting a program that focuses on brothers and sisters reconnecting and bonding. One foster youth, Miranda, age 14, shared, “This is one of the best camps I’ve been to because I get to share this with my little brother.” Another foster youth, Darwin, age 13, said, “This camp reminds me that all I need is family.” A Camp Connect volunteer, Andrew, described his favorite moment as “at the end of camp when the children went on stage and spoke of how they enjoyed camp and valued the time they got to spend with each other.”
