San Diego-Imperial Council has been serving the youth of the San Diego and Imperial Valley region since 1916 and encompasses over 7,500 square miles across San Diego and Imperial Counties. The council serves over 6,000 youth members in 350 units and is supported by over 4,000 registered and trained adult volunteers. Scouting programs in this council reach from the desert and farms of Imperial Valley to the beaches of San Diego County, and include Sea Scouts, Venturing, Exploring, Scoutreach, and High Adventure.
The council reports over 6,000 youth members, over 4,000 local volunteers, and more than 50,000 hours of community service. Its community involvement includes partnerships with various organizations, businesses, and community groups, and a collaboration with the County of San Diego to create an enhanced park facility that can be used by Scouts, community organizations, and families.
The mission of San Diego-Imperial Council, Scouting America is to encourage responsible fun and adventure, instill sound morals and values in young people, foster citizenship, service, and leadership, and inspire the next generation of leaders to serve local communities. The council’s leadership team includes Scout Executive Sean Roy, Council President Joe Minner, and Council Commissioner Mike Byerline. Staff member Jeremy completed Emergency Medical Technician training in the San Diego area and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy with a focus on Emergency Management and Homeland Security from Arizona State University.
Former participants report learning leadership, preparedness, professional and networking skills, communication, perseverance, and first aid skills in Scouting, and they describe gaining confidence for college, internships, public service, and careers in fields such as law and medicine. One testimonial credits Scouting with enabling lifelong memories and service to the Scouting community across the country, and another credits Scouting with inspiring a passion for medicine.
