San Diego-Imperial Council, Scouting America has been serving youth in the San Diego and Imperial Valley region since 1916 and serves over 6,000 youth members in 350 units. The council is supported by over 4,000 registered and trained adult volunteers and reports more than 50,000 hours of community service. Its programs include Cub Scouts for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, Sea Scouts as a co-ed nautical program, Venturing as a youth-led program, Exploring with activities and mentorship, Scoutreach as the outreach division, and High Adventure with leadership training and activities beyond basic camping. The council’s mission is to encourage responsible fun and adventure, instill sound morals and values in young people, foster citizenship, service, and leadership, and inspire the next generation of leaders to serve their communities. The leadership team includes Scout Executive Sean Roy, Council President Joe Minner, and Council Commissioner Mike Byerline. One staff member, Jeremy, completed Emergency Medical Technician training in the San Diego area and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy with a focus on Emergency Management and Homeland Security from Arizona State University. The council reports partnerships with various organizations, businesses, and community groups, and notes a collaboration with the County of San Diego to create an enhanced park facility that can be used by Scouts, community organizations, and families. Testimonials from participants describe learning leadership, preparedness, professional, networking, communication, perseverance, and first aid skills through Scouting, as well as developing interests in public service and medicine.
