The mission of the San Diego Ballet is to excite, enrich, and entertain its diverse audience through an imaginative presentation of quality classical and contemporary dance. The school is led by School Director Karen Foster and Artistic Director Javier Velasco. San Diego Ballet collaborates with the San Diego Museum of Art as part of the museum’s Centennial Celebration. Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT), offered at the school, is founded by Marie Walton-Mahon and is described as a body conditioning and strengthening program that focuses on training the muscle memory required in each exercise in all forms of dance, using ballet-technique specific exercises in a graded and progressive manner from junior through advanced levels. Private classes and coaching are not recommended for students under 13 years old and are stated to not conflict with regular classes, and each student must be individually evaluated as to when it is time to wear pointe shoes.
