Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Program includes activities such as 3-D printing, digital art, DNA extraction, science of cooking, creation of short stories, poetry, spoken word material, art, cultural exploration, word games, carpentry, acting, audio, electrics, costume design, self-management, nature arts and crafts, building forts, singing songs, digging in the dirt, exploring bug homes, scavenger hunts, and playing games. The program also includes field trips to community farms, outdoor education centers, and nature retreats, and time to learn about nature through art.

Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Program offers summer camps focused on STEAM experiences, literacy, performance arts, and outdoor experiences, and the afterschool program is an extension of the annual multicultural Explore Next Door summer camp. The program’s four anchors are Academic Support, Career Pathways, Social-emotional Tools, and providing a safe space and sense of belonging. The curriculum includes financial literacy education and arts such as painting, crafts, dance, and music, and 4th to 6th grade students in the STEAM camp learn about contributions to science from marginalized voices such as BIPOC and Indigenous Peoples. The Outdoor Nature Experiences program includes mindfulness practices and behavioral health tools.
BIPOC Support Foundation’s Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Program offers a free afterschool program for underserved youth of San Diego that includes multicultural experiences, behavioral health tools, personal development, community engagement, career pathways, tutoring, mentoring, and outdoor experiences. The literacy curriculum is designed and offered by leaders of color who identify with students’ experiences of marginalization, economic hardship, adoption, and immigration. Staff serve as positive role models and lead programs through a trauma-informed lens. BSF partners with local organizations, educators, and community leaders to ensure programs are culturally relevant and responsive to the needs of the community, and the summer programs are supported by grants from The San Diego Foundation, the Harris Foundation, Nordson Foundation, and San Marcos Community Foundation. BEHIND THE CURTAIN camp is taught by industry professionals and is offered in partnership with local theater company New Village Arts, and North County Thrive Outside camps are held at Palomar Community College and welcome Oceanside residents.
BSF’s Explore Next Door Youth Enrichment Program bridges the cultural and financial differences of disadvantaged San Diego youth by providing a toolbox of skills for long-term success and childcare for low income families while parents are still at work. Explore Next Door provides after school programs and summer camps to historically underserved students, families, and communities in San Diego, and its approach is equity-focused, holistic, and centers multicultural inclusivity and mindfulness practices. The mission guiding this work is that each and every child has a fundamental right to an excellent education — one that leaves her ready to create a fulfilling life, make positive change, and help build an equitable future for everyone. In early 2020, BSF’s founder and CEO, DeMilo Young, led BSF in providing emergency hardship grants and marketing resources to small BIPOC business owners, and in 2021, BSF shifted focus to directly empowering BIPOC youth and their families through initiatives intentionally designed to address inequities.
